Alan Eugene Blume was born May 13, 1956 in Morris, Minnesota to Leonard and Mavis (Simpson) Blume. He attended and graduated Herman High School in 1975. While in high school he was active in FFA, high school band, wrestling, and football. He received all conference recognition and was one of the only eighth graders to play varsity football at that time. He furthered his education by attending college in Crookston, Minnesota and playing on their football team. After two years of college at Crookston he attended North Dakota State University and graduated in 1979. While at NDSU he played college football, was a member of the AGR fraternity, Crop and Soil Club, Animal Science Club and Saddle Club.
After graduating from college Alan returned to Herman where he did what he loved, farming. In 2013 he built a new home north of Herman on his farm. He was known to take daily trips around the gravel roads surrounding his fields to check on the crops. Alan was a volunteer fireman, a member of the Oddfellow's Lodge, and a junior high football coach. He was a lifetime member of United Methodist Church. Alan was very giving of his talents and finances, never missing a fundraiser of anything that supported Herman, as well as many national organizations.
Alan enjoyed the companionship of his dogs Maggie, Hillary, Sally and Sarge. He also loved trips to South Dakota for pheasant hunting, Canada fishing trips, and deer hunting in northern Minnesota. Alan was an awesome uncle to his nieces and nephews. He was known to give farming advice and lectures on farm safety to his nephews, and unsolicited marriage and parenting advice to both nieces and nephews.
Alan is survived by his mother Mavis Blume of Barrett, Minnesota; siblings: Neil (Patricia) Blume of Herman; Dale (Debbie) Blume of Norcross, Minnesota; Lois (Terry) Bartell of Herman; John (Annette) Blume of Fergus Falls, Minnesota; and Karl (Paula) Blume of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada; fifteen nieces and nephews: Darin (Karla) Blume of Rosemount, Minnesota; Steven (Amanda) Blume of Herman; Kevin (Ronda) Blume of Herman; Dana (Katy) Blume of Elbow Lake, Minnesota; Dominic (Charlene) Blume of Elbow Lake; Michael (Audra) Bartell of Alexandria, Minnesota; Christa (Chris) Howell of Moorhead, Minnesota; Nancy (Brandon) Solberg of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Bryan (Mackenzie) Blume of Williston, North Dakota; Josh (Kelsie) Blume of West Fargo, North Dakota; Maria (Cory) Grunewald of Rothsay, Minnesota; Hannah (Mikael) VahnDijk of Vancouver, Washington; and Luke, John and Lauren Blume of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada; and twenty-six great-nieces and nephews.
