Charles Jones

Funeral Mass for Charles Walter Jones, 89, of Herman, Minnesota will be held Saturday, November 20, 2010 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Charles Catholic Church of Herman. Honorary Pallbearers will be Charlies Grandchildren and Great-Grandchildren. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service time. Interment will be at Lakeside Cemetery, rural Herman. Charles Walter Jones was born on January 25, 1921 to Walter and Margaret (Stern) Jones in Willmar, MN. Shortly after his birth the family moved to Herman, MN where he attended Herman Public School from first grade until he graduated from Herman High School in 1939. Charles served his country in the United States Army during World War II from 1942-1945. Charles Walter Jones was united in marriage to Dorothy Mae Reckner on November 20, 1947. Making their home in Herman, MN, they enjoyed raising their children David Charles, born on October 14, 1948, and Janice Margaret and Joyce Ann, born on February 21, 1950. During this time Charles worked several jobs for the City of Herman: Chief of Police, served on the Herman Fire Department, and kept the City of Herman utilities up and running, from the waterworks to the street maintenance. Charles started working for the University of Minnesota Morris in 1962 as the first Police Officer hired at the new campus. He retired in 1981. After his retirement from the U he kept busy working part-time selling cars for Berger Chevrolet, vegetable gardening, and baking cookies and pies. Charles passed away Tuesday, November 16, 2010 at the Traverse Care Center in Wheaton, Minnesota with his family at his side. Charles is survived by his wife Dorothy Jones, Herman MN, his son David (Rhonda) Jones, Morris MN, Janice (Randy) Tolifson, Norcross, MN, Joyce Jones, Norcross, MN, Grandchildren: Michael (Stacy) Tolifson of Wheaton, MN, Tammy (Steve) Berg of Big Lake, MN, Matthew (Abby) Jones of Shakopee, MN and Andrea (Brent) Hipsher of St. Louis Park, MN, two Great-Grandchildren: Shane and Kyle Tolifson of Wheaton, MN, two Sisters: Katherine Zimkowski of San Antonio, TX, and Alice Hunt of St. Paul, MN, two Brothers: Donald (Delores) Jones of Herman, MN and George (Ruth) Jones of Hopkins, MN, one brother-in-law, Jack Reckner of Cantonsville, MD, and numerous nieces and nephews. Charles was preceded in death by his parents Walter and Margaret Jones, his sister Elizabeth Smith, and his brother James Jones.
