David (Ozzie) Robert Austvold, age 85, a lifelong resident of Herman, passed away December 23, 2024. He died peacefully at his home, surrounded by his family.
Funeral Services will be held Monday, December 30, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Herman, Minnesota with Pastor Heather E. Klasson officiating. Organist will be Olivia Richards with special music by Greg Sperr. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service time at the church. Burial will be at the Lakeside Cemetery, rural Herman, Minnesota at a later date. Military Rites will be provided by the C. Walter Larson American Legion Post #378.
David was born in Grant County on August 19, 1939 to John and Julia (Strand) Austvold. He lived his entire life in the Herman area, attending country school and graduating from Herman High School in 1958. David and Sharon were married on December 26, 1970. Daughter Kirsten Kai was born on August 4, 1974. They spent hours at the hospital in Wheaton waiting for Kirsten to arrive. When she was finally born, he soon after went straight to the races at the fairgrounds in Herman. Michael David was born on July 30, 1976. He was cutting a customer’s hair when Sharon called to say, “It’s time to go!” Customer returned later to finish the haircut.
David was a member of the Minnesota Army National Guard. He attended barber school in Minneapolis. He returned to Herman and bought a barber shop, which he ran for over 50 years. David was also a US Rural Mail Carrier for 29 years, retiring at the age of seventy-five. He also owned land that he farmed for several years.
He was an avid supporter of anything involving Herman and was active in several local organizations including the American Legion-Post 378, the Herman Fire & Rescue squad, the Grant County Fair Board, and was a member of the United Methodist Church. As a member of the Fair Board, he helped organize the parade for several years, traveling to other fairs and shows to find entertainment and participants. He was honored for his service to the community by being inducted into the Herman Hall of Fame in 2000.
David loved anything to do with the Minnesota Twins, collecting their bobble heads, and listening to commentary by Sid Hartman. He even painted his barber shop red and blue. He also set up a speaker to project the Twins games to the downtown area, from which he also played Christmas music in the winter. He loved watching sports of all kinds, and enjoyed following his grandchildren and great-nieces and nephew’s events. After retiring, he enjoyed trying fishing and made many trips with his friends to fish in Canada and participated in the Herman fishing league. He often came home and said it was “a dead sea”. He was on the Firestone team bowling league for several years. More than anything David treasured time spent with family.
David is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Sharon Austvold; daughter Kirsten and Kelly Kleven of Pueblo, CO; son Michael and Candy Austvold of Cottage Grove, MN; grandchildren: Maryssa, Auremie; Lexi; Atley, Mason; Desi and Anna; great-grandchild: Bennett; nephew Jon; nieces: Jane, Julie, Stephanie; and many cousins.
David is preceded in death by his parents: John and Julie Austvold; brothers: Norris and Paul Austvold; sister Joane Aumann; and his sister-in-law, Mary Austvold.
