Funeral Services for Donald Grohn of Wheaton will be held Thursday, October 11, 2007 at 11:00 AM at St. John Lutheran Church in Wheaton, Minnesota. Rev. Charles Horkey will officiate. Visitation will be held Wednesday evening at St. John Church from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 PM. Mr. Grohn passed away Saturday morning, October 6, 2007 at the Wheaton Community Hospital. He was 88 years old. Dons grandchildren will act as his pallbearers. Interment will be at St. John Lutheran Cemetery in Wheaton. Donald Reinhard Grohn was born Feb 6, 1919, in Belfield, North Dakota, the son of Reinhard Ludwig Grohn and Pearl E. (Petree) Grohn. When he was an infant he moved with his parents and his older sister Dorothy to rural Wheaton. He, along with his parents and sister, lived north, east, and west of Wheaton. Donald was baptized by Rev. Gierke in the home of Gust Walz on August 22, 1923, and was confirmed by Rev. Gierke at Zion Lutheran Church in Parnell Township on March 25, 1934. He attended West Lake Valley Township School and graduated from the Morris Agriculture School in 1937. Donald married Alice Helen Hallstein of Charter Oak, Iowa, on September 2, 1941, at St John Lutheran Church in Wheaton. He made his living as a grain and dairy farmer west of Wheaton and he enjoyed fishing, visiting with friends, and playing cards. He was active in several card clubs, 4-H, Meals on Wheels, St John Lutheran Church, the Gideon Society, and the Lutheran Laymen's League. He also served on the Wheaton Creamery Board. Donald was preceded in death by his wife Alice, who died on August 24, 1972. He married Margaret Johanna (Niss) Meidinger on April 17, 1974. Donald and Margaret were Winter Texans for 20 years. Margaret died on March 29, 2006. His sister, Dorothy Pearl Hennen, died on February 22, 1996. Donald is survived by 3 sons and their wives: Allen and Gloria Grohn of Fergus Falls, Minnesota, Dennis and Jeanne Grohn of Sioux City, Iowa, and Bruce and Gwendolyn Grohn of Lebanon, Oregon, 11 grandchildren: Brenda Haar, Scott Grohn, Christine Lauzon, Susan Beck, Stephen Grohn, Deborah Durio, Tonya Mund, Drew Haack, Nathan Grohn, Allison Carlson, and Austin Grohn, 14 great grandchildren.
