Dorothy "Deane" Nadine Schmidt

Dorothy “Deane” Schmidt, 96, of Herman, MN passed away on Saturday, September 16, 2023 while a resident of Perham Living Center in Perham, MN.

Deane was born in Herman on November 1, 1926, the fourth of eight children born to C. Christie and Reba Sherrett.  She graduated salutatorian from Herman High School on June 2, 1944 and married Orville Schmidt on June 4, 1944.  The couple moved to California for a few months before returning to Herman.  To this union two sons and eight daughters were born.

Deane considered herself a homemaker, however, she worked various jobs outside the home, especially caring for others through public health.  Caregiving was second nature to her.  Not only did she raise ten children of her own, but she loved having her grandkids spend time with her at her home.

Deane was passionate about donating blood to the Red Cross and encouraged her children to donate as they were able.  For many years, Deane was a voracious reader and she spent many hours crocheting. Christmas tree skirts, afghans and doilies abound and can be found in her kids’ and grandkids’ homes.

Deane is survived by her children: Chuck (Linda) Schmidt, Pink (Nancy) Schmidt, Midge Toutges, Terry (Butch) DeVries, son-in-law Dave Rivers, Denise (Ron) Derby, Marilyn Christians, Cork (Craig) Loge, Karla (Chuck) Dahlheimer, and Kim (Randy) Buchholz; her many grandchildren and great grandchildren.  She is also survived by her sister Glady Haugen, sister-in-law Celia Schmidt and numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband Orville, daughter Barb, son-in-law Butch Christians and grandsons Mark Christians and Chris Banken.

Funeral Services will be held Sunday, October 1, 2023 at noon at the United Methodist Church in Herman, MN with Pastor Heather E. Klason officiating. Organist will be Olivia Richards with special music by Greg Sperr and Mary Jo Schwartz.

Visitation will be held Sunday morning one hour prior to service time at the church.

Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery, rural Herman. Honorary urn bearers will be her grandsons and granddaughters.
