Ella Selma Marquardt was born August 23, 1921 in Taylor Township, rural Wheaton, Minnesota, to Paul and Tillie (Meyer) Marquardt. She was raised and attended country school in Taylor Township. As a young woman, Ella helped with household duties at the Einer Ahlsten farm; she also worked in Wheaton, Minnesota. It was at the Einer Ahlsten farm that she met her future husband, Clarence Ahlsten. Ella moved to Santa Monica, California where she married Clarence on October 29, 1941. In 1949, the couple returned to Minnesota and made their home on the Ahlsten family farm in Taylor Township. It was here that they farmed and raised their three sons. Upon retirement from farming, Ella and Clarence spent several winters in Mesa, Arizona. Clarence passed away June 16, 1992. Ella continued to live on the farm until moving to Wheaton in 2000, where she resided until her death. Ella was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. She was devoted to her family and was grateful for every moment spent with them. Ella enjoyed visiting with family and friends, playing cards, cooking and baking. She made certain no one left her home without a full stomach. In addition to her passion for feeding family and friends, Ella will always be remembered for her faith in God, beautiful smile, listening ear, and willingness to give to others. Ella is survived by her three sons, Jim (Sally) Ahlsten, of Santa Rosa, California; Gary Ahlsten of Wheaton; and Rod (Lori) Ahlsten of Eden Prairie, Minnesota; four grandchildren, six great grandchildren, one brother Leonard (Shirley) Marquardt, and one sister-in-law Esther Ahlsten.
