Funeral Service for Ella L. Schmidt, age 89, of Norcross, Minnesota will be held Friday, September 26, 2014 at 4:00 p.m. at United Methodist Church in Herman with Rev. Darrell Boe officiating. Urn bearers will be Ella's grandchildren. Visitation will be held Friday afternoon from 2:00 p.m. until service time at 4:00 p.m. with lunch being served at 3:00 p.m. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery rural Herman. Ella Louise Symens was born on March 24, 1925 in Lennox, South Dakota the daughter of Oda and Christina "Stena" (Smit) Symens. Her family moved to various farms in South Dakota before moving to Minnesota in 1933. She began her education in country school in Willow Lake, South Dakota and finished eighth grade country school in Minnesota. After her education Ella stayed home to care for her ill parents and help on the family farm. Ella was united in marriage to William Herman Schmidt on September 18, 1954 at Eden Reformed Church in Herman. The couple made their home on a farm near Norcross, Minnesota where she lived until health forced her to move into Herman with her daughter Bonnie. She was an active member of the Norcross United Methodist Church and Ladies Aid. She was a member of the Norcross Ladies Auxiliary. She enjoyed quilting, crocheting, tatting, sewing, gardening and loved cooking for her family and friends. William passed away on January 11, 1970. Ella passed away peacefully September 22, 2014 at Bethany Home in Alexandria, Minnesota with her family at her side. Ella is survived by three children: Larry Schmidt of Casselton, North Dakota; Bonnie Schmidt of Herman; and Barbara (Eric) Haugtvedt of Hazel Green, Alabama; seven grandchildren: Daniel Schmidt (Tessa Colbjornsen), Ryan Schmidt, Sarah Schmidt, Katie Schmidt, Ashley Haugtvedt, Amanda (Adam) Gentry, and Kayla Haugtvedt; two great grandchildren: Payton and Mason Schmidt; and one sister-in-law Leona Symens of Herman, Minnesota, and many nieces and nephews. Ella was preceded in death by her husband, son Glen, parents, sisters: Grace Bruns and Lena Symens, and brothers: Simon Symens and George Symens.
