Funeral Service for Harold E. Hilbrand, age 98, of Herman, Minnesota will be held Saturday, September 20, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Eden Reformed Church in Herman with Rev. Ted Graf and his wife JoAnn Graf officiating. Special Music will be provided by Norman Bartells Jr. and Vange Anderson. Pallbearers will be Harold's grandsons: David Hilbrand, Paul Hilbrand, Darren Wood, Chad Hilbrand, Mark Hilbrand, Todd Hilbrand, Jonathan Gilbertson, Matthew Gilbertson, Ladd Sumerfelt, Luke Sumerfelt, Ryan Hilbrand, Michael Hilbrand, Kevin Hilbrand, Ross Findlay and Rahn Findlay. Honorary Pallbearers will be Harold's granddaughters: Charlene LaGrange, Karla Wood, Tina Veldhouse, Denise Sumerfelt, Michelle Ringer, Sarah St Louis, Shannon Smith, Rachel Robinson and Roxanne Hagen. Visitation will be held Friday evening, September 19th from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. Oddfellows Service at the Ranney-Bainbridge Funeral Home in Herman. Visitation will continue Saturday morning one hour prior to service at the church. Interment will be in Lakeside Cemetery, rural Herman. Harold was born on November 13, 1915 in Greene, Iowa, son of Edward T. and Nancy (Muller) Hilbrand. He was baptized March 22, 1916 and confirmed into the Reformed Church in Aplington, Iowa in 1932. He graduated from Parkersburg High School, Parkersburg, Iowa in 1935. He came to Minnesota to visit his brother John where he met Helena Bertram. They were united in marriage on October 22, 1939 at Norcross Methodist Parsonage. To this union eight children were born, four boys and four girls. Harold and Helena farmed near Norcross. Upon their retirement from farming in 1973, they moved into Herman. They celebrated 63 years of marriage on October 22, 2002. Helena passed away on December 28, 2002. Harold continued to live in Herman until February of 2011, when he moved to the Good Samaritan Center in Hoffman. When the Good Samaritan Center closed, Harold moved to the Barrett Care Center on October 29, 2013. He was an active member of the Eden Reformed Church holding many offices. Harold was also a 43 year member of the Oddfellows Lodge in Herman, where he served as Noble Grand. He loved going bear and deer hunting "up north" in Baudette, Minnesota. He could tell many interesting stories of his hunting trips. He also loved to travel, camp, and ice fish. He was a very caring person and loved to have his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and friends visit him. Harold passed away on September 14, 2014 at Lake Region Hospital in Fergus Falls, Minnesota. Harold is survived by seven children: Edwin Hilbrand of Baudette, MN; Elaine (Gary) Wood of Alexandria, MN; Derald (Diane) Hilbrand of Herman, MN; Esther (Byron) Gilbertson of Herman, MN; Lois (Dennis) Sumerfelt of Wheaton, MN; Timothy Hilbrand of Park City, MT and Ladonna (David) Findlay of Norcross, MN; daughter-in-law Mary (Dave) Gisch of Baudette, MN; twenty four grandchildren; forty great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two brother-in-laws: Theodore (Darlene) Bertram of Hewitt, MN and Rudy Bertram of Herman, MN; sisters-in-law: MaryAnn Bertram of Graceville, MN; Darlene Bertram of Herman, MN; Marvis Bertram of Rosholt, SD, and many nieces and nephews. Harold was preceded in death by his wife Helena, son Lynn, daughter-in-law Peggy Hilbrand, a grandson Clinton Sumerfelt, sisters: Edith (Rhiner) Hartman, Elnora (Fred) Bartell, Evelyn Hilbrand and brother John (Mary) Hilbrand.
