Hattie Catharine Walz of Wheaton, passed Saturday morning at the Rosholt Care Center in Rosholt, SD. Hattie was 100 years old. Funeral Services for Hattie Walz will be held Tuesday, January 16, 2007 at 11:00 AM at the St. John Lutheran Church in Wheaton. Visitation will be Monday evening at the Ranney Funeral Chapel in Wheaton from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM. Burial will be at Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Parnell Township. Pallbearers were Hattie's 5 grandchildren: Terrilee Hutter, William Hutter. Bruce Hutter, Russell Solberg and Janine Solberg Hattie was born March 10, 1906 in Dumont, MN to parents August and Anna (Krueger) Hartjen. She grew up in Dumont and attended school in Dumont and graduated from Wheaton High School. She took teachers training at the Normal Training Department of Wheaton and Mankato State College. She taught for 8 years before marrying John Walz on October 25, 1934 at St. Johns Lutheran Church in Dumont. John passed away in July of 2000. They made their home on the family farm along with Johns brother Arnold. They farmed until 1974 when they moved to Wheaton. After her family was grown, Hattie helped with Special Ed classes in Wheaton. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, crafts, and was especially fond of playing cards. Hattie was living at the Prairieview Place in Wheaton until she moved to the Rosholt Care Center in September of 2006. Hattie is survived by 2 daughters: Carol and Bill Hutter of Bay City, Michigan, Janet and Ron Solberg of Hills, MN 5 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, 1 brother: Milbert and Leona Hartjen of AZ, 2 sisters: Violet Nelson of Glenwood and Bernice Niss of Fairmount, MN, 1 sister-in-law: Esther Walz of Browns Valley, MN. Many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, 1 son: Duane John, a sister: Frieda Hauschild, 2 brothers: Percy and Alfred Hartjen, 1 grandson: Brett Solberg.
