Helen Lurelle Larson was born April 9, 1933 in rural Norcross, Minnesota to Clarence and Margaret (Erickson) Haugen. Helen's paternal grandmother Lena (Mrs. Ole) served as her midwife assisting with her birth. Helen grew up in Norcross and attended grade school there; later attending and graduating from Herman High School in 1951. The day after her graduation Helen got on a bus and moved to Minneapolis accepting a job at Northwestern Bell.
Helen married her high school sweetheart Milford Larson on November 28, 1954 at Norcross Lutheran Church while Milford was home on leave from the military. Following Milford's service the couple moved onto the family farm in Macsville Township where they would reside until Milford's passing on April 6, 2013. After Milford's death Helen moved into the Pullman House in Herman where she resided until her death.
Helen was an active member of United Methodist Church in Herman serving many roles including Sunday school superintendent. Besides her work at Northwestern Bell she worked at the Herman School as a library aid and playground assistant and worked many years at the First National Bank in Herman. Helen also drove the school van delivering Herman school kids to their events, often commenting to her family how much she enjoyed the time spent with those kids.
Helen loved following sports; whether it was at the high school level or professionally. She followed closely the Minnesota Twins (especially Kirby Puckett), Minnesota Timberwolves and the Minnesota Lynx (especially Lindsay Whalen). She even enjoyed watching Tiger Woods play golf even though she never picked up a golf club herself.
Helen will be dearly missed by her family and friends. She will be remembered for her love of family, church, sports, the farm, and rarely ever being seen without a smile on her face.
Helen is survived by her three children: Keith (Norma) Larson of Zimmerman, Minnesota; Randy (Nancy) Larson of Herman, Minnesota; and Scott Larson (Joan Smith) of Morris, Minnesota; four grandchildren: Luke Larson of Zimmerman; Dr. Christopher (Rebecca) Larson of Alexandria, Minnesota; Colby Larson of Alexandria; and Cassie (Zach) Pierce of Moorhead, Minnesota; sisters: Margaret (Jim) Hale of Aurora, Colorado; and Eleanor Barber of Vallejo, California; brother Jerry (Fern) Haugen of Long Prairie, Minnesota; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband, parents, sister Clarice Cox, brothers Thomas and Leland, and step-granddaughter Georgiann "Gigi" Lock.
