She entered Heaven's gates on June 4, 2015. Helen graduated from Elbow Lake High School and attended the normal training department of the Wheaton Schools. Normal school was a school created to train high school graduates to be teachers. Upon graduation from normal, Helen taught in a rural school in Grant County. While attending school in Wheaton, she met Cally Schumacher. They married on March14, 1942 and raised four children on a farm just outside of Wheaton, MN. Helen and Cally were married 64 years before Cally passed away in 2006. Helen spent more than 65 years in the Wheaton area before relocating to Minneapolis 6 years ago to be closer to the majority of her family. Helen actively helped on the farm. She also worked at First State Bank of Wheaton for six years as head bookkeeper. It was after that, Helen took up quilting. She started a quilting business, which included implementing her passion for teaching by giving quilting lessons. She sold material and other quilting sundries from her shop located on the farm. A true leader, Helen played a key role in both the community and the church. She was a part of the founding group of the Home Council and served as its first president. Helen was the first woman president of the church council and when the ALC and LCA churches combined, she served as the first council president of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Throughout the years, Helen was very active in all facets of church life and community involvement. A consummate mother and homemaker, Helen was an excellent cook and enjoyed preparing meals for her family and friends. You could stop by the farm any time and the coffee pot would be on and a lunch/meal would appear out of nowhere. Family came first in Helen's life. Helen was a devoted and loving mother. She was very proud of her family and was excited to be Grandma Helen to her 6 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Helen loved family get-togethers; any chance to spend time with her family was important to her. She did whatever it took to attend events for her children, grandchildren and, most recently, great-grandchildren. She extended a helping hand to all in need and loved to share her wisdom and talents. Helen - Mom - Grandma - friend will be missed by all that knew and loved her.
