Jacob Henry DeHaan, 84, lifelong resident of Red Lake Falls, MN passed away on Tuesday March 19, 2024 at the Villa St Vincent, Crookston, MN with his loving family at his side. 

Memorial Mass of Jacob will be held 10:30 AM on Saturday, March 23, 2024 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Red Lake Falls, MN with Father Bob Schreiner officiating. Burial will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery near Red Lake Falls MN at a later date. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. 

Jacob Henry DeHaan was born on October 20, 1939 in Crookston, MN son of John and Gertrude (Perrin) DeHaan. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Red Lake Falls, MN. He attended St. Joseph Catholic School. 

Jacob entered the US Army on December 11, 1956 and honorably served his country in Korea until being discharged November 28, 1958. 

On May 5, 1962 he was united in marriage to Barbara Jean Myhrer at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Thief River Falls, MN. To this union 5 children were born, Robert, Kimberly, Donna, Carole and Janell. The couple made their home in Red Lake Falls, MN where Jacob worked for area farmers and as a sugar beet truck driver for a short time. He began employment on February 15, 1962 for Central Bi-Products where he proudly worked until 1991. He then worked for Sanitary Service & Recycling until 2004. 

Jacob enjoyed rummage sales, holiday yard decorating, tearing down old buildings, cutting wood, camping and traveling in the United States. Watching western movies, game shows and the history channel were favorites. He enjoyed men’s morning coffee and playing Farkle. One of his most treasured memories was in 2019, being on the Honor Flight which happened to be at the same time as his 80th birthday. 

Jacob was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church and served on the parish council. He belonged to the Red Lake Falls American Legion where he served as post commander and served on the funeral hor guard. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and in his early years volunteered with the Red Lake Falls ambulance.

Jacob is survived by his children Robert (Paula) DeHaan of Wheaton, MN, Kimberly (Pat) Conway of Eden Prairie, MN, Donna (Jeff) DeHaan of Newport, MN, Carole (Craig) Chaput of Red Lake Falls, MN and Janell (Bill) Vatthauer of Crookston; His memory lives on through his cherished grandchildren: Nicole (Jared) Larson, Katie Chaput (Brady Strom), Jordan (Mikayla) Chaput, Chelsey Chaput (Adam Stalboerger), Brooke (Cole) Wagner, Travis (Shelby) Vatthauer, Tyler DeHaan, Rochelle Chaput (Tyler Conklin). The light of his life continues to shine through his great-grandchildren: Mariah, Sydnee, Matilda, Riker, Hensley, Hudson, Autumn, Cooper and Evie with one more due in August. Siblings Gerard (MaryAnn) DeHaan of Thief River Falls, MN, Elaine “Sis” Boucher of Crookston along with several nieces, nephews and a wide circle of family and friends. 

Jacob is preceded in death by his loving wife Barbara, parents, siblings Martin, Catherine, Anthony, Margaret, Joseph, John and infant brother Robert.
