Funeral Service for Jerald "Jerry" Apland, age 61, of Barrett, Minnesota will be held Friday, March 14, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Herman, Minnesota with Rev. Carl Berner officiating. Pallbearers will be Gary Engquist, Kurt Engquist, Lynn Engquist, Tyrone Hanson, Gary Hyttsten and James Exe. Visitation will be held at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Thursday, March 13th from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. Prayer Service and Time of Sharing. Interment will be in Lakeside Cemetery. Jerald Dean Apland, son of Sylvan and Irene (Belding) Apland, was born July 15, 1952 in Fergus Falls, MN. He grew up in Herman, MN where he attended school and graduated in 1972. He went on to college in Fergus Falls for carpentry. He did carpentry for twenty-one years. During that time he met Lou Engquist and they were united in marriage on April 27, 1974. To this union two children were born, Sarah Ann and Ronald Dean. Their union was not to be. He later married Sherry Gale on January 25, 1987. During that time he went back to college and received his boiler's license and became the head custodian for WCA schools for twenty-two years until his passing on March 8, 2014 at North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale, MN. Jerald "Jerry" Apland loved to be outdoors, hunting, fishing and most of all gardening. He started selling in the farmers markets all around the area for the last five years where he became known as the "Jellyman". He made twenty-seven different kinds of jams and jellies. Jerry was a very hard working, kind man who loved spending time with his family and friends. He lived one day at a time. Jerry is survived by two children: Sarah Apland (Ron Halverson) of Barrett, Minnesota and Ron Apland of Chattanooga, Tennessee; nephews: Travis (Karen) Kjorness of Barnesville, Minnesota; David (Tammy) Kjorness of Herman; and Scott (Stacy) Kjorness of Lowry, Minnesota; and his aunt Ethel Hakenson of Alexandria, Minnesota. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents Sylvan and Irene (Belding) Apland, sisters: Joan Bullick, Marlys Smith and Katherine Kjorness; and brothers: Sylvan Jr., James and Richard.
