Katherine passed away Tuesday morning, January 27, 2009 at the West Wind Village in Morris, Minnesota. She was 101 years old. Katherine (Morgen) Ewers was born on June 28, 1907 in Spink County near Mellette, SD to John and Nellie (Fitch) Morgen. Katherine was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith. She started her school days in Mellette, SD and then finished in the Selfridge, ND area where her family later moved. On February 10, 1924 Katherine was united in marriage to Ermon Ewers. Katherine and Ermon were blessed with two children: Mary Irene and Ermon James (Jim). They started their life "ranching" near Selfridge until 1935 when the ranch was destroyed by a tornado. The couple then moved their family to the Johnson, Minnesota area. They started their "farming" years at Johnson, MN and then purchased a farm near Dumont, Minnesota, where they continued to farm and raise cattle. In 1968 they moved into Wheaton, but Ermon continued to farm. Katherine enjoyed things like knitting and crocheting. Each of her children and grandchildren received afghans and any amount of doilies they wanted. Katherine also had mastered the art of tatting with a "shuttle", in which you make a creation like a doilies using this tool forming intricate knots and loops. Katherine was known for her large gardens and she canned or froze most anything you could imagine. There was not a berry or fruit that she could not make into a jelly, jam or preserve. Katherine baked something almost everyday and was known for her pies, cake doughnuts, and especially her homemade bread and caramel rolls. The greatest gift on this earth Katherine felt God gave her was her family. Katherine was what God had in mind when he created "Sister" "Mom" and "Grandma". The term "Unconditional Love" and never ending patience was made with her in mind. She could "spoil" with the best of them! Katherine was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church of Wheaton, Minnesota. She was active for many years in the church Ladies Aid. Katherine is survived by one daughter, Mary I. Anderson of Morris, Minnesota, one son Ermon James (Jim) Ewers and his wife Jean of Alexandria, Minnesota, one sister Eileen (Bud) Sandland of Bismarck North Dakota, granddaughters, Cheryl (Ron) Kenyon of Alberta, Minnesota, Janelle (Don) Kill of Alberta, Minnesota, Kathy (Brad) Ellingson of Maple Grove, Minnesota, Janet (Scott) Hanson of Cottage Grove, Minnesota, seven great grandchildren: Jody (Craig) Silbernick, Michael (Jenny) Kill, Ryan (Allison) Kill, Denise (Doug) Koch, Brittany Kill, Rachel Ellingson, Brandon Ellingson, six great great grandchildren: Zachary and Connor Silbernick, Taylor, Haley, Addison Kill, and Payton Koch. Katherine is also survived by many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Nellie Morgen, her husband, Ermon Ewers, four brothers, Alfred, Bill, Harry, and Nick, two sisters, Irene Arndt, and Agnes Schumacher and one son-in-law, Wallace Anderson.
