Melvin Lloyd Nerenz of Wheaton passed away Friday, June 5, 2015 at Sanford Hospital in Fargo, North Dakota at the age of 95. Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, June 10, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church in Wheaton with Rev. Michael Breach officiating. Organist will be Sara Rinke with special music provided by Josiah, Aria, Thaddeus and Miriam Mueller. Interment will be in Wildwood Cemetery, rural Wheaton. Pallbearers will be George Sagissor IV, Matthew Sagissor, Miriam Mueller, Philip Sagissor, Nathan Nerenz and Brent Nerenz. Military Rites will be provided by the Merton Dale American Legion Post #80. Visitation will be held Tuesday, June 9th from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. Prayer Service at St. John Lutheran Church in Wheaton. Visitation will continue Wednesday morning one hour prior to service time at the church. Melvin was born on October 11, 1919 to Theodore and Anna (Rixe) Nerenz in Johnson, Minnesota. He was baptized on November 16, 1919 in Johnson. Melvin attended school in Sedan, MN, completing grade eight on June 3, 1932. On August 5, 1934 he was confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Browns Valley, MN. Melvin proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II in the 211th Military Police Company. He was stationed in the Philippines, New Guinea and Japan. Melvin married M. Lorraine Johnson on June 19, 1949 at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Minneapolis, MN. They made their home in Willmar, MN where he worked at the Willmar State Hospital until June of 1962 when they moved to Wheaton. He served as the custodian at St. John Lutheran Church until his retirement in 1985. Melvin was a faithful member of the church choir beginning in Willmar and then in Wheaton. He was very active in the V.F.W. Post #5909 in Wheaton, serving as adjutant for many years. Melvin was inducted into the Older American Hall of Fame in Wheaton and also served as the President of the Wheaton Senior Citizens. For the past ten years Melvin resided at the Browns Valley Health Center in Browns Valley, MN. Melvin is survived by his daughter Julene (Rev. George) Sagissor of Clear Lake, MN; his son John (Jo Anne) Nerenz of Wheaton; six grandchildren: George Sagissor IV of Sioux Falls, SD; Matthew (Emily) Sagissor of Moorhead, MN; Miriam (David) Mueller of Isle, MN; Philip (Chelsea) Sagissor of Crown Point, IN; Nathan Nerenz (Elizabeth Elder) of Washington, D.C. and Brent (Amara) Nerenz of Fargo, ND; six great-grandchildren: Josiah, Aria, Thaddeus and Cadence Mueller, Zechariah Sagissor and Ben Sagissor; a sister Dorothy (Ken) Lahti of Albert Lea, MN; one niece, nephews and other relatives. Melvin was preceded in death by his wife Lorraine; his parents Ted and Anna Nerenz; his brother Rev. Kenneth Nerenz; his sisters-in-law Janet Nerenz and Elaine Aarstad; his nephew Peter Nerenz and his great-nephew Jeffrey Nerenz.
