Norman was born in rural Traverse County, Minnesota, October 31, 1926 to William and Nettie (Cole) Magnuson, the youngest of three boys. He attended rural school for the first eight grades at Monson Township District 52 and graduated from Wheaton High School in 1944. While in high school he excelled in sports, lettering in football, basketball and track early in his high school years. This love of sports continued with Independent basketball and softball, playing for the White Rock Rockets until his early 30s, and bowling, motorcycle riding and snowmobiling until the progression of his Parkinsons caused him to stop. He had a great love for farming, and farmed his entire life until Parkinsons Disease forced him to completely retire at the age of 72. As a young man Norman was active in 4-H. Norman had a great interest in nature, and still enjoyed watching the birds each day from the wheelchair he was confined to the last 2 years of his life.
