Richard Owen Lundquist and his identical twin brother, Robert Kenneth, were born to Joseph and Clara Brown on September 5, 1921 in Minneapolis, MN. Richard & Robert were baptized on March 14, 1922. On December 15, 1925, Richard and his twin brother, Robert were adopted by Simon and Edith Lundquist of rural Wheaton, MN. He grew up on the Lundquist farmstead in Parnell township of Traverse county and attended District 7 Parnell Township school, graduating eighth grade on June 30, 1936. He attended Siloah Lutheran Church and was confirmed on June 30, 1935. From grade school, Richard and Robert attended West Central School of Agriculture in Morris, MN, graduating March 29, 1940. After graduating, Richard returned to the family farm to work with his parents and twin brother. Richard met Ilene Weick at a Farm Bureau meeting in Parnell Township and soon after started courting her. They were married on March 28, 1943, which was Ilene's 20th birthday. They were married at the home of Richard's parents, Simon & Edith Lundquist. Richard and Ilene resided with Simon and Edith for five years before making their own home at the "Lehman Place" which was on the northeast corner of the same section as the home place. Their first son, Owen Kenneth was born while they lived there. When Simon & Edith retired and moved to Wheaton in 1952, Richard and Ilene moved to the home place. Julieann Ellen and Bruce Arlen joined the family after they moved there. Richard and Robert farmed in partnership for 52 years, retiring in 1992. Richard's hobbies included spending time with his family and friends, farming, attending and being active in many ways at Siloah Lutheran Church, serving on various committees and boards. Richard & Ilene enjoyed attending many annual church conventions over the years. Richard was instrumental in the beginning of the Annual Pancake Suppers held at Siloah. He attended the 63rd Annual Pancake Supper in November of 2012. He did not recall missing any of them. Richard also cherished the many reunions he attended with his birth family, the Brown Family, at various locations across Minnesota. He felt so blessed to be reunited with all of his living siblings when he and Robert were in their early twenties. Richard was a very dedicated member of the Traverse County Historical Society for many years and was an Honorary Board Member at the time of his death. His last visit to the museum was in June when his grandson, Eric and his family were here to visit from Texas. He recalled a wealth of information of the history of Traverse County. Richard was a very active member of Lutheran Brotherhood/Thrivent Financial for Lutherans for many years. He and Ilene volunteered many hours to benefits that were held for those in need. Richard participated in the Traverse County Relay for Life since 1999 as a cancer survivor of 24 years, having many issues with skin cancers. Richard was dedicated to regular exercise after having heart stents placed in 2001. He and Ilene traveled to Wheaton three times per week to attend the Cardiac Rehab program at the Wheaton Community Hospital. Richard attended that exercise program until he and Ilene moved to Prairie View Place in January of 2007 after living with daughter Julieann and husband Bud for three years due to Ilene's battle with cancer. At that time he began attending the exercise program offered at the Traverse Care Center. After Ilene's passing in April of 2007, Richard remained a resident of Prairieview Place until May of 2010 when he entered the Traverse Care Center. He continued with the exercise program faithfully until the past few months when his energy began to decline. He enjoyed many activities at the Care Center, being a member of the Food Committee, Resident Council, the Men's Group, playing bingo, attending weekly church services at the Care Center, participating in holiday celebrations, and enjoying the company of all of the staff and residents. He was so grateful for the wonderful care he received there. He very much enjoyed the Ave Maria Catholic Church Adopt A Grandparent Program. He developed many close relationships with the students who came to visit with him each week during the school year. Richard led a Christian life, guided by his parents, Simon & Edith. Simon was the son of a Lutheran pastor who was one of the first pastors of Siloah Lutheran Church. Simon and Edith shared their entire being with their adopted sons, nurturing them into fine young men, farmers, husbands, and devoted fathers. Richard was the best father and grandfather that one could ask for, enjoying all of the activities and life's journeys of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Richard shared so many times how thankful he was that he had been adopted by Simon and Edith and raised in a Christian home. Richard was extremely devoted to his son Bruce who had so many challenges during his lifetime. Richard's one wish was that Bruce be called to heaven before he was so that he would know that Bruce was safely in God's arms when he got there himself. Richard spoke frequently during his lifetime and especially in the past few months of how blessed and thankful he was to have led such a fulfilling, long life. He was so humbled by those many blessings. God kept Richard in His loving care here on earth until his last peaceful breath. Richard was very confident in his faith in God. When told by his daughter that is was okay to answer God's call to come home with Him, his reply was "That's my plan!". His final wish was for his family and friends "to be sad for just a little while" and then "to be happy and to celebrate because he would be home at last where he truly wanted to be".
