Vera Caroline Schmitz, age 90, of Chokio, Minnesota passed away Friday, August 21, 2015 at Essentia Hospital in Graceville, Minnesota. Funeral Services will be held Monday, August 24, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Chokio, Minnesota with Rev. Gloria Anderson officiating. Organist will be Jolene Amborn. Interment will be in Artichoke Lake Lutheran Cemetery, rural Artichoke, Minnesota. Pallbearers will be Jody Fuhrman, Travis Fuhrman, Joey Fuhrman, Tyler Fuhrman, Wally Schmitz, Daniel Wells and Mike Ritter. Honorary Pallbearers will be Ginger Fuhrman, Valorie Parramore, Bethany Richter, Jennifer Bridges, Marissa Hanson, Josh Fuhrman, Justin Fuhrman, Devic Bridges, Demitrius Bridges, Sophia Hanson, Bailey Hanson, Cynthia Parramore, Ronald Parramore, Stephen Fuhrman, Corey Fuhrman, Chelsey Swenson, Zoey Fuhrman, Jayce Fuhrman, Shae Fuhrman and Katy Boyle Fuhrman. Visitation will be Sunday, August 23rd from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Chokio. Visitation will continue Monday morning one hour prior to service time at the church. Vera Ostendorf was born April 30, 1925 in Gothenburg, Nebraska to Cobus and Hattie (Gerdes) Ostendorf. She grew up on the family farm along with twelve siblings. She attended school in Gothenburg until she moved to Minnesota to live with her sister Ida and Ida's husband Adolph Lindner. She worked for the Peyton family from rural Dumont and also Ludwig and Ann Schmidt. There she met Earl Schmitz. The couple married December 31, 1945 in the middle of a snowstorm. They farmed in Parnell Township and had three daughters: Linda, Judy and Evelyn and one son Wayne "Butch". They moved to Chokio in the fall of 1959 to a farm ten miles south of Chokio. Vera began working at Chokio Meats for LeRoy Vang in 1964. When Vera and Earl decided to quit farming and moved to Chokio, Vera eventually bought the meat shop and enjoyed working with the people there. She continued to enjoy fishing and hunting and all of her grandchildren and teaching them to fish at the cabin on Lake Traverse. In 2001 Vera had a stroke and entered Good Samartian Home in Clinton and later moved to Grace Home in Graceville where she resided until her death. Vera is survived by her children: Linda Richter of Canby, Minnesota; Judy (Gary) Fuhrman of Johnson, Minnesota; Evelyn Schmitz of Chokio; and Wayne "Butch" (Penny) Schmitz of Chokio; ten grandchildren: Valorie (Tom) Parramore; Beth Richter; Jennifer (Victor) Bridges; Marissa (Jon) Hanson; Jody (friend Stacy) Fuhrman; Travis (Jennifer) Fuhrman; Joey (Chantelle) Fuhrman; Ginger Fuhrman (friend Randy); Tyler (Tasha) Fuhrman; Wally Schmitz; Randy Shelstad; and Roz Shelstad; sixteen great-grandchildren: Cynthia and Ronald Parramore; Sophia and Bailey Hanson; Daniel Wells; Devic and Demitrius Bridges; Josh and Justin Fuhrman; Corey and Stephen Fuhrman; Katy Boyle Fuhrman; Chelsey Swenson; Zoey, Jace and Shae Fuhrman; and special step-grandson Mike Ritter. She is also survived by one sister Frances Schultz of Gothenburg and one brother-in-law Gordon Williams of York, Nebraska; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Earl, son-in-law Dennis Richter, granddaughter Cynthia Richter and one grandson.
