On May 31, 1952, he married Lenora Krosch and together they farmed and raised a family in Leonardsville Township. Over the years he served on the Leonardsville Township Board, Traverse County Fair Board for twenty years and was a trustee at St John's Lutheran Church, Dumont. At the time of his death he was a member of St John Lutheran Church, Wheaton. Vernon will be remembered for his passion of family and farming. He was a loving husband and devoted father to his children and grandchildren. Vernon created special memories around the cabin on Lake Traverse, games, and outdoor adventures for his children and six grandchildren. He was a talented woodworker and for years was never without a project. A lifelong pastime was fishing, which he enjoyed for many years with friends and special fishing buddy, Eldren Lichtsinn. He was admired for the courageous and graceful way he handled life after the stroke he suffered in 2011 and for maintaining a joy for life in spite of his disabilities.
